The relocation process is typically very stressful. Add the element of going off to college for the first time and the host of mixed emotions that come along with it. This combination can definitely make the ‘going away to college’ process seem incredibly difficult. However, there are a few things you can do to make the process easier to handle. Consider these four tips and watch how things become a breeze.
1. Create a running list of necessities.
Even though colleges don’t typically give out a back-to-school list, there are quite a few things you know you’ll definitely need. At the beginning of the summer, sit down and make a list of all the potential necessities such as shower shoes, towels, and three-ring binders.
2. Purchase smaller items in advance.
Items such as blankets, school supplies, clothes and dorm decor can be purchased first. These items are easy to purchase and store ahead of time. Whether you choose to shop online and have the items delivered or visit local stores on a weekly basis, try to finish as much as you can ahead of time. It’s also wise to do a little bit at a time, so you don’t get overwhelmed. If you wait until the last minute when everyone else is doing their school shopping, you’ll run the risk of not getting the items you want because they’re sold out.
3. Purchase larger items on the site.
If your school is at least an hour away, it’s a good idea to buy the bigger items once you get into the city of the school. Major supercenters like Target and Walmart all carry the same mini-refrigerators and microwaves. Purchasing those larger items when you arrive at the campus will allow you to avoid carrying a lot of bulky, oversized items. The drive to college should be as comfortable as possible.
4. Hire a moving company.
For items that you must take with you that are larger, it’s a great idea to hire a moving company, such as Midwest Moving & Storage, Inc, that can help you move in and out of your dorm. A moving company will take away all the unnecessary stress involved with the heavy lifting. There’s a technique with heavy lifting that involves bending the knees. Many back injuries happen because people don’t support themselves well when they’re lifting heavy items over a longer period of time. Movers do this type of job on a consistent basis since it is a part of their profession. Leave the heavy lifting for them.
These four tips will make an astronomical difference when you’re looking to make the moving process easier. While it may be hard to say goodbye to your family when you go off to school, at least you’ll be well-equipped for your new adventure!
