Aside from the required education and training, there are some key personality traits, skills, and qualities that every great ultrasound technician, or sonographer, should have. If you’re aspiring to work in the diagnostic field, it’s a good idea to read up on the kind of skills every future ultrasound technician should have. Working as an ultrasound technician can be challenging, but improving these skills and qualities is a surefire way to help you succeed.

Compassion and Interpersonal Skills

Just like any medical procedure, the thought of receiving an ultrasound can be unnerving. Your patients might come in feeling nervous, confused, or even afraid. You could encounter a patient that’s nervous about their first pregnancy ultrasound or have to calm one that’s terrified of their upcoming breast biopsy.

A good ultrasound technician will know how to put their patients at ease. They’re friendly, warm, and able to answer their patient’s questions about the procedure in a way that makes perfect sense. Compassion goes a long way. You don’t need to be an extrovert to take a job as a sonographer, as long as you can react to your patients’ concerns both calmly and professionally.

Technical Skills

As an ultrasound technician, you’ll need to know how to use and properly maintain your equipment. Ultrasounds are user-dependent and require a great amount of technical knowledge to operate. There are multiple modes you’ll need to alternate between depending on the circumstance, amongst other things. A good ultrasound training program will teach you everything you’ll need to know. If you’re a dedicated learner, you’ll be able to pick up on the job-specific technical skills in no time.

An Eye for Detail

To the ordinary eye, the images produced by an ultrasound machine are completely unreadable. But what the average person sees as splotches of black and white, a trained sonographer will see as important tissues and organs. Knowing what’s normal and what’s not in an ultrasound image is an important skill for ultrasound technicians. Being able to notice these minor abnormalities can be the difference between your patients recovering from their ailment or getting worse. A small, grain-sized spot in the image could be the beginnings of cancer. By catching it at its earliest stage, you’ll be able to put your patient on a fast path to recovery, which can improve their likelihood of surviving.

Physical and Mental Strength

Working as a sonographer can be hard work, both physically and emotionally. You’ll be scanning multiple patients during the day and dealing with emotionally draining situations, like lost pregnancies and cancer diagnoses. Being able to cope with stress is a skill every future ultrasound technician should have. If you’re stressed, you might start missing important details, making misdiagnoses, or accidentally acting rude and curt with your patients. A good sonographer will know when to take breaks, and what calms them down when they’re stressed. That way, they can stay focused, and provide the best possible care for their patients.
