No matter what the job may be, everyone forgets the basic aspects of it from time to time, especially if you’re a new hire. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s always a good idea to refresh yourself on the basics. This one may seem obvious, but it’s very easy to forget in the heat of the moment. You must never, ever touch a coworker who has been electrocuted. Humans make for excellent conductors, so grabbing someone to help them when they’re being electrocuted can put you in the same predicament. It can be easy to forget this when you see a fellow employee in need.

Instead, what you need to do is turn off the power source or find a safe way to remove the persom from it using a non-conducting material. After that, call 911. Once help is on the way, if you are CPR certified and have determined that the electrocuted employee is safe to touch, you may begin to try and resuscitate them.

Follow Safety Protocols

Many workplace electrocutions occur because an employee didn’t follow proper safety standards. These rules are made for a reason, so they must be followed to the letter. Make sure that you know all of your company’s safety protocols—it can be the difference between a normal day at work or a trip to the emergency room. If you are unsure about something, you can always check with your supervisor in order to verify if you are doing the task correctly or not.

Use the Correct Gear

Equipping the right gear can greatly increase your chances of staying safe in the field. Making sure you have items such as goggles, a hard hat, and insulated gloves are a good start, but those are just a few of the pieces of gear necessary for a safe work environment.

Sometimes the right gear depends on where you are working that day. If you are going to be working in a damp or wet area, having a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) installed  your tools will help keep you safe from electrocution.

Mind Your Surroundings

Whether it’s other employees or an exposed wire that needs to be fixed, anything can lead to a bad situation if not handled properly. Being hyper-aware can help you make sure that a poor decision doesn’t have to lead to an even worse result. Being mindful of nearby hazards can help you save a coworker from an untimely accident, so it never hurts to be too observant.
