College is a big part of your life, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy. It’s hard to do well even if you spend all your time studying, but that’s not what most people do. People need to maintain their social lives, work, study, go to class, and sleep, and that makes focusing almost impossible. Thankfully, there are a few tricks for maintaining better focus this year so that you can get back to excelling in college while still having a life outside of the classroom.
Goals and To-Do Lists
To stay focused this year, you must establish clear goals and to-do lists early and frequently. A big issue that college students and older adults have is that they lack purpose. They’re just going along with the motions with no clear goal. You must establish goals and to-do lists so that you always have the next step in mind, and reaching the end of a task can seem more attainable. Create goals for grades and things that give personal fulfillment, and create to-do lists for chores, studying, and other miscellaneous tasks.
However, remember to give yourself room to make mistakes. A big issue that many college students have is that they create goals or lists. But when they don’t meet the mark, they look down on themselves and end up in a self-perpetuating cycle of negativity.
Create Designated Spaces
This trick may be challenging depending on the size of your dorm or apartment, but it’s one of the best ways you can turn your focus around. Setting a dedicated study environment is one of the best ways to boost focus and achieve success in college, mainly because it eliminates distractions.
For example, if you try studying by your bed, you may want to go to sleep or play on your phone. A quiet and dedicated space could solve this, and for a lot of people, that means working at the library. It’s easier to focus on the task in front of you when you surround yourself with people in the same situation as you.
Focus on Your Physical Health
Another way to make concentrating easier is to focus on your physical health. Doing this can be hard when you’re at college because you have so many other priorities in front of you, but you should still give yourself the time and space to take care of your body. Your body and mind are connected, and if your physical health suffers, your mental health and ability to focus will as well. Take some time here and there to do little exercises and get your blood pumping. Additionally, consider exercising outside, as the sun and vitamin D will make focusing easier.
You should do everything you can to maintain better focus this year because it can transform your life and make college so much easier for you. Yes, college will still be a lot of work and take a lot of time, but when you know how to focus and prioritize your time, it can be a much smoother process.
