Graduating from high school and going off to college is a very exciting, and also anxiety-provoking, time of someone’s life. There are many big decisions to be made and these decisions have a direct bearing on one’s future, adding much more pressure to make the "right" decision. Choosing a major often feels like choosing the direction for the rest of one’s life and, in many ways, it is. College provides us with the basic and specialized skills we need to succeed in a career associated with what we studied.
This is why choosing a major is important. College is expensive and the job market can be brutal. The choice made can have a profound impact on one’s life path. What follows are a few tips for how to go about choosing the right major.
Consider Interests
Thinking about what one likes to do and is good at is a great first step towards choosing a major. If interests include helping people, writing, building and tinkering, these can all help provide direction for future career paths.
Think Realistically
The job market of today is tough. There are also majors that while, very interesting and rewarding to study, do not provide many career options upon graduation. It is important to consider the ability to seek relevant employment when choosing a major.
Consider Your Options
There are tons of different colleges out there, don’t settle without looking into all available options. There are different colleges that are known for, or specialize, in a particular discipline or subject, there are those that are known for their atmosphere. Whatever is most important should be included in one’s search.
For example, a college that has a health care aide program can help one get on the fast track to a career in the healthcare career tract. Offering programs that allow one to start working in a fast paced career in a matter of months.
Attainable Goals
It’s certainly okay to have big dreams. However, we have to make sure that the goals we are setting for ourselves are realistic and attainable. Choosing a major based on much thought and consideration gives one a higher chance of success and job satisfaction later in life. Breaking down one’s goal into smaller "sub-goals" is a great way to see progress made, and to stay focused on getting where one wants to be.
Everyone is different – they have different interests and skills sets. Thankfully, there are also a wide variety of fields that allow for people with specialized interests to find good jobs. There are fields that, no matter the time or place, are always going to be in demand career fields, like healthcare and teaching. There are also many other burgeoning possibilities in technology, media, and more. Looking towards where one’s interests lie, as well as what jobs one’s area has to offer, helps make the decision of majors just a little easier.
