Just about every college student is on a budget, which is a good reason to come up with clever decor alternatives when setting up your dorm room. Don’t worry about having limited space or a small budget – you can still make your dorm room reflect your taste and style.

1. Choose a Theme

If you have a decor theme in mind, you won’t be tempted to purchase items that won’t coordinate. Whether you want your dorm room to look like a tropical island or you’re into WWE decor, there are plenty of low-cost options and discounts like WWE shop coupons out there to help out.  Create the space you’ve been daydreaming about. If you and your roomie have similar taste, even better – you can share the decor costs.

2. Purchase Functional Pieces

Dorm rooms aren’t known for being spacious which means you have to be smart when choosing furniture. Look for pieces that do double-duty, like storage cubes that function as chairs and desks with an extra shelf for books. The more hidden storage your furniture has, the less cluttered your room will be.

3. Check the School’s Policy

Before you shop for the latest gadgets and appliances, find out what the college will provide you with, either for free or for rent. Also, find out what you’re allowed to have. The last thing you want to do is drop money on a microwave only to find out that you’re not allowed to have one in your room. Lastly, talk to your roommate about what he or she is bringing with them so that you don’t end up with two of everything.

4. Ask for Secondhand Items

Before you buy anything, find out if your family members can give you a hand-me-down. Most people hang on to furniture and decor items that are in good shape, even if they don’t use them anymore. You could get a lot of items for free if you don’t mind using something that’s secondhand.

5. Consider Craigslist

Craigslist is a great tool for college students on a budget. A lot of people list items for cheap or even for free. Just be careful about who you’re buying an item from and try to take someone along with you when you go to pick it up.
The biggest way to save money on your door room furnishings and decor is to have a plan and not get ahead of yourself. Start out with less than you think you need – you can always add more later.
