6 Things To Know Before Becoming a Hairstylist

There are many things to consider when choosing career paths, such as work-life balance, independence, job growth, and pay. Working as a hairdresser can be perfect for the right person. Here are six things to know before becoming a hairstylist.

Take Care of Your Body

Hairstylists need to take pristine care of their bodies. If you get injured, you have to take a break from work and usually won’t get any paid time off or workman’s comp! Get used to being on your feet all day long. Also, learn some self-care methods because you’ll practice repetitive movements for hours at a time. All week. All year.

People Skills Are Crucial

You don’t have to be bubbly and extroverted all the time, but your primary role is customer-facing. If you aren’t a small-talk kind of person, don’t worry. Everyone can learn people skills over time, and at some point, it becomes automatic. If you want to be a hairstylist, you can start as a receptionist at a salon to get some practice and make sure it’s right for you.

Continuing Education Is Normal

A career at a salon is lovely because you can receive a license after about a year in school. However, continuing education is typical, if not essential, as you develop your profession. Workshops are amazing ways to learn technique secrets from the masters. Get Used To Working Odd Hours

Getting a haircut, especially a dramatic one, can be an emotional experience for a person. As a hairstylist, you need to be empathic to your customer’s situation. They might hate the results of the services they received (even if they requested it), so stylists need to stay calm, respectful, and attentive to the client’s journey.

Communication Skills Are a Must

To help prevent and de-escalate situations like the above, hairstylists must be great communicators. Understanding the client’s goals is part of the job. Often, they will come into salons having a vague idea of what they want. They might use industry jargon in incorrect ways. It’s up to you to figure out what they intend before you start snipping.
