Ways That Higher Education Is Innovating for the Future

Education is complicated and becomes even more complex as you venture into higher education. There are so many factors, students, educators, administrators, etc., that one cannot comprehend it all. However, with that said, higher education administrators are preparing for the future and changing their traditional methods. Read on to learn of a few ways that higher education is innovating for the future.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

One way higher education embraces the future is through MOOCs and open curricula. Some may view these courses as higher education regressing since a significant point of pride for colleges and universities is the staff-to-student ratio. These courses have a poor ratio in that regard, but they create an opportunity for students to learn, work with each other, and then work with assistants and adjuncts. As a result, students can learn the subject matter while the schools are more efficient, and the professors can better devote their time to more specialized courses and research.

The Cloud

One of the ways in which higher education is embracing technology and preparing for the future is through the cloud. The cloud has transformed how almost every industry gets business done, and higher education similarly utilizes the cloud to update themselves and simplify normal operations. For example, the cloud has made it possible for students to access class and course information from almost anywhere. This connectivity has transformed higher education. Similarly, on the administrative side, a lot more paperwork and day-to-day operations have been simplified.

Shifting Roles

Higher education is also innovating for the future by being less stringent with their traditional roles. Traditionally, higher education has been divided between professors and students, with little room or movement. This model is effective but doesn’t foster too much openness or communication. Instead, it creates an us versus them situation, something the schools do not want.

Combatting this, more schools are embracing adjuncts, teaching assistants, and visiting faculty. In addition, there is a much greater emphasis on global education so that faculty can coordinate with other researchers in other departments and schools. Similarly, students can better interface with peers and find the resources they need instead of having 10+ students waiting outside the professor’s room for office hours.

Interactive Applications

Beyond technology such as the cloud, schools are also integrating virtual and augmented reality and many other forms of technology to make learning more engaging. Textbooks and classrooms are a way to educate students, but there is little practical application. Through interactive technology, students can see and test whatever they are learning and better prepare themselves for the future.

These ways that higher education is innovating for the future may seem minimal at first, but they are significant improvements to how schools did things previously. They also show just how much time and work administrators put into improving higher education and creating the next generation of people who run the world.
