Afterschool activities and events are fun, but unfortunately, many students don’t know that because they don’t attend. If numbers are looking low, then eventually, some of those programs will get canceled because students never make an appearance.
Whether it’s a sporting event, science fair, school, play, or art show, they all need a decent following. Supporters keep programs going, increase funding, and might even further education. Here are some tips to increase attendance for school events.
Know Your Audience
The target audience is students, but you may wonder what types of students. Whom do you want to attract to this event? There are several demographics to consider when mentioning students, and you should be aware of the different age groups and hobby/club interests.
Take all of these aspects into account before planning the event. Know your target audience so you can recognize what events will attract them. Try to follow and stay current with the latest trends, and incorporate those popular trends into the event to quip student interest.
Advertise Everywhere
Awareness will help to increase the numbers. Students need constant reminders about upcoming events. With every reminder, make sure to reveal new information to get them even more curious about how things will turn out.
Students are on social media, so naturally, you want to post the events there. Still, you always need to advertise on the school website and premises. Advertise the event by upgrading to digital signage throughout the school. Mention the upcoming event during every morning and afternoon announcement. Have one of the students make the announcement every now and then so they can play up the best parts. They’ll recruit their friends to attend, too!
Involve the Community
Get the community involved with the event. Community involvement spreads beyond the school walls, so activities involving the community might attract more than just students. It’s about building a following; to do so, you might need to branch out beyond the confines of the school walls.
Furthermore, community involvement could help strengthen partnerships. If there are drives or funding the school needs, stores and corporations might lend a helping hand after attending a few schooling events. See if there is an afterschool restaurant or eatery that the students like to frequent and ask the owners to get involved.
Think Creatively
Think outside the box. Come up with your wildest idea and see how the students respond to it. The most shocking events usually pull the largest crowds. Take a survey and ask the students what they want to see or how they feel about the event you have planned.
Sometimes, going to the source is the only solution. The student body can offer up suggestions for the organizers to implement in the planning phase. Learn to be flexible and step outside the norm or comfort zone. It’s taking a leap of faith, but it might pay out in the end!
Increasing attendance for school events can benefit the institution in a bigger way beyond afterschool involvement.
