How To Overcome Burnout as a Dental Student

Education in any medical field is demanding on the body and mind. It’s common to feel burnout due to tedious work, constant studying, testing, and hands-on experience.

Don’t give up on your dreams of becoming a dentist. There’s a way to overcome burnout as a dental student so that you can healthily pursue your career.

Take Breaks While Studying

You might think that giving yourself 10 minutes to play on your phone is an efficient break. The truth is that this type of break doesn’t call your mind. Instead, it provides your brain with more information and additional strain.

Instead, make the most out of a 10-minute break by doing things that calm your mind and body. Lay out a yoga mat to meditate or take a quick shower. Go outside for a brisk walk and reconnect with nature. Listen to music that makes you feel at peace, or read a chapter of a book you enjoy.

By the end of your study session, you’ll have a positive memory to look back on rather than wasting your phone for that study break.

Limit Study Hours Each Day

Your brain can only take in so much information in one sitting. When you’re feeling burnout as a dental student, you can overcome this challenge by limiting your study hours each day.

Most students think studying at the library for five hours straight will enhance their knowledge. When you feel like you’ve hit your studying breaking point, it’s time to stop. Studying for long periods in one sitting makes it more difficult to retain information.

Schedule Days Off

Schooling in the medical field can feel exhausting. Continuing your dental education is important, but so is your mental health. You need to schedule days when you don’t go to class or study.

Failing to schedule personal days of fun and relaxation is one of the biggest reasons students become burnt out quickly. Think of an activity you love and do it during your off day. Spend the day hiking, shopping, or eating at a new restaurant! School is an important responsibility, but you must also prioritize your mental health to succeed as a dental student.

Make Time for Friends and Family

Your support system plays a vital role in your battle to reach your educational and personal goals. Friends and family are there for the good and bad times. When you need a laugh, a person to go to lunch with, an exercise partner, or a study buddy, your support system is there for you.

Reach out when you need help. Isolating yourself and solely focusing on education is exhausting. You cannot effectively learn or succeed in that type of environment, especially when you already feel burnt out. This time will rejuvenate your mind and soul, making your education more enjoyable.

While you’re a student, you’re also a person. Take mental breaks as often as you need them. School is important, but you must also prioritize your mental health so that you can thrive in your future career as a dentist.
