Entertainment While on a Student Budget

While you’re a student at college, entertainment may not be a practical addition to your budget. Although you may want the newest XBox or Playstation system, can you really afford the extravagance at the moment? Is dining out an activity that won’t cause stress when your fees are due? Keeping yourself entertained while in college is important in order to keep your sanity, but it doesn’t need to come at a high price.

1. Streaming Media – Why worry about cable or satellite TV when most of the popular shows you like can be accessed through the Internet? Since free Internet is available at many dorm rooms, you can watch your favorites without spending a single dime on the convenience. However, some services such as Netflix and Hulu have subscriptions that will still save a great deal of money compared to monthly television bills.

2. Gaming – For those who can wrap themselves up in online gaming periodically, there are ways you can enjoy many games for free. Game developers have been releasing entertaining titles that anyone can play without purchasing disks or subscriptions. If you want in-game content, then you’ll have to pay extra. However, the game and many of the features are free to explore. These games are quite involved and include some of the biggest names in development such as Sony, Blizzard, and Bioware.

3. Coupons – Your date doesn’t need to know that you have a pocket full of coupons in order to save money. Many restaurants have online coupons that you can acquire through a signup process or are displayed on websites. Periodically, you could get coupons emailed to you from the most popular of dining locations. When it comes time to pay, casually slip the coupon to the cashier without attracting the attention of your date.

4. Matinees – Instead of planning an expensive evening of dinner and a movie, why not save money and attend a lunch and a matinee? Generally speaking, lunch options at restaurants are usually less expensive and matinees could greatly reduce the ticket price at the booth. Entertainment doesn’t have to be restricted as a night-time activity, and matinees are usually less crowded providing a more pleasant experience.

5. Board Games – Board games don’t have to be tailored to keeping children occupied. In fact, there are many games that are tailored for adults and can provide hours of entertainment. Instead of spending money at the bar with your friends, why not invite them over for a game or two with a bottle of your favorite beverage. This could save a great deal of money for everyone involved.

6. Entertainment Books – If you live in an area that sponsors entertainment books, you can save a great deal of money on a variety of coupons and discounts. Many times, school children will sell these books as fund raisers providing you with access to a cornucopia of businesses that could prove benefits regardless of your needs. These books could include everything from car care to restaurant deals and specials.

There are a variety of ways a college student can save money while still feeling like he or she is a part of the world. Your wallet doesn’t have to contain a great deal of cash in order to enjoy yourself or impress a date. Find ways to pay less and enjoy yourself without the stresses of being on a strict budget.
