Management Tips For School Projects

School projects are a vital part of one’s education and school experience. It is not just a test of your knowledge, it will also be used as a gauge to measure your ability to do research, filter information for relevant points, manage time and organize your work. A school project is also a great opportunity to hone your skills and use what you have learned. To manage your projects efficiently, consider these tips:

Manage Your Time

Determine the time period within which you need to work on a school project. Whether it is a few days, a few weeks or several months, it will be much easier to manage your schedule and budget your resources if you know how much time you have. Prepare a weekly project chart or a simple calendar and make notes to mark specific dates such as deadlines, interview schedules, purchase of materials, submission of draft copies, etc. Having an overview of the whole process of making the project will help you plan your time and resources carefully, and determine whether you are ahead of schedule or running late.

Next, keep all school project-related stuff in one place. Use folders or binders and put everything that has anything to do with your project in them so they are easier to find. Take down notes and review your progress on a weekly basis. Before the beginning of each week, make a plan for the next week, crossing out the tasks that have been completed and integrating the tasks that you have left unfinished.

Break Down Your Project

Learn to look at your project piece by piece. It will be less intimidating if you could break it down by task, schedule and relevance. If there is one big task you need to complete, consider the smaller tasks necessary to accomplish it and work on them one by one.

Organize Your Resources

School project resources include materials, equipment, interview sources, research sources, books and other related publications. If not provided or listed, identify the resources you need so you have enough time to find and use them. This is especially important if the project requires intensive research, experiments, tests, interviews and surveys. Do not wait until the last minute to check if your resources are still available.

Stick to a Schedule

As part of your education, you need to learn how to manage your own time without supervision. To be more efficient, schedule time blocks each day. One block can be an hour, two hours or more depending on your activities. Set aside this time to focus on working on your school project and your school project only. Choose a quiet place such as your room, the basement, den, a corner cafe or the library. Inform your family and friends so they know not to disturb you during this period.

Avoid Procrastination

When it comes to school projects, it is often easy to ignore a task and do something else more interesting. Avoid this as much as possible. Time flies quickly and if you put off doing one task today, keep in mind that you will have one more task to complete on top of the other tasks scheduled for tomorrow. Honor your schedule. If you can, finish tasks ahead of time. That way, you have more free time to do what you want and still keep up with your project schedule.

Minimize Distractions

Ask your family and friends for support. If they know you need to finish a school project on a certain deadline, they will be less likely to bother you. Unplug the TV, hide the iPod and the game console, and use the Internet only for research. Make a point to only read and answer e-mails if they are related to your school project. Otherwise, save the rest for reading later. When you are done with your project, you will have all the time in the world to do as you like later.
