How to Save Money on All Your College Needs

College can be an enriching, wonderful experience. It may be the only time in your life so many subjects are open for you to study, or so many people from different parts of the world are available for friendships. Unfortunately, college is also expensive and getting more so every year. Here are some basic tips for saving on your college needs.
Housing
Dorm living has its advantages, but can also be too loud, social, and somewhat restrictive for some students. Most campuses have student apartments nearby, such as Berkeley Student Apartments in California, Harvard Square and Stony Brook Commons in Massachusetts, and University Suites and the Villas, among other options, for Western Carolina and Appalachian Universities. Prices can be as low as $500 a month, or as high as over $2000 a month. Most apartments come with amenities like fitness centers, study rooms (or entire study floors), or in the case of Berkeley, a rooftop terrace. Living arrangements can range from a studio to a four-bedroom apartment.
Books
For most universities, books can cost upwards of $300-$400, depending on one’s major. English, psychology, religion, and philosophy are some of the biggest offenders. Some courses, such as science courses, also require supplies like microscopes or petri dishes to be purchased prior to the start of the semester. Purchase texts and supplies used from reputable sites such as amazon.com, or rent them for a reduced rate. You may also purchase used supplies from friends or seek texts from the college library. Some librarians keep copies of specific books or manuals and will check them out to students for an entire semester.
Transportation
Many colleges don’t allow freshmen to have vehicles on campus, but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook in paying to get around. If you’re going to school in a large city, don’t depend entirely on public transit. Instead, arrange carpools with friends, walk or bike, or use the campus bus system if one is available.
Social Activities
Every college student needs a recreational outlet, but these too cost money. This is where going to college in urban areas has an upside; many large cities offer free activities. You can also get student discounts on sports events and theater tickets. Local restaurants, tanning salons, gyms, and other businesses generally offer discounts, coupons, and gift cards to college students as well.
College generally comes with not one, but several prices attached to it. However, knowing your way around expenses with tips like these can help you do much more at your chosen university than study–or pay bills.
